FROM A SIMPLE SENTENCE TO A COMPLEX SENTENCE WITH AN ADJECTIVE CLAUSE
- An industrious person is is not always sure to succeed in his or her life. (a simple sentence) -> A person who is industrious is not always sure to succeed in his or her life. (a complex sentence with an adjective clause)
- The mistress sold all of her husband's belongings behind his back. -> Behind his back the mistress sold all of the belongings which belonged to her husband.
- The Japanese soldiers had no atomic bomb to use in the counter-attack to the American soldiers with the same bomb by then. -> The Japanese soldiers had no atomic bomb that they could use in the counter-attack to the American soldiers with the same bomb by then.
- Mr. Black's political statements in his speech on his inauguration as a president were foolish. -> The political statements that Mr. Black made in his speech on his inauguration as a president were foolish.
- The expatriate would like to die in his native village. -> The expatriate would like to die in the village where he was born.
- Their dwelling place is haunted. -> The place where they live (dwell) is haunted.
- Alf never told us the expected time of his arrival before calling on us. -> Alf never told us the time when he expected to arrive before calling on us.
- What is the deed of a good man? -> What is the deed that a good man would do?
